GST Motorsports claims 1st in AWD Unlimited at Redline Time Attack Buttonwillow, CA 04/29/07

After placing 2nd in the Pro Class Time Attack at Subiefest we spent the past two weeks trouble shooting the fueling issues we encountered during the event.  Many hours later we located the problems, a bad lifter pump in the fuel cell and poor unbalanced injectors.

With the problems resolved and a fresh tune on the motor we decided to run the car at the Redline Time Attack in Buttonwillow. For those not familiar with the Redline Time Attack series more information can be found at the following website http://www.redlinetimeattack.com/

Upon arriving at Buttonwillow the team knew they would have their work cut out for them with competitors such as Speed Gallery with their 650+whp Porsche turbo and Crawford Performance’s widebody STI’s.

Our strategy for the Saturday sessions was to just run the car at low RPM and boost settings to get our driver Brian Lock of GOTO:Racing settled with the car and track.  With a couple of laps under his belt, Brian was able to turn a 1:54.xx.  Using our low boost setting and only 5500rpms we decided to park the car until Sunday and spend the rest of the day watching the competition.

Following the drivers meeting Sunday morning we determined we needed to run a reasonable lap in one of the practice sessions to get a time on the board so we would have a decent starting position for the timed event in the afternoon. Brian went out with our plan determined as to run one warm up lap and one hot lap to see where we would stack up. For this session Brian was on the low power map still but was told to rev the motor out to 6500rpms, Brian turned in a 1:52xx good enough to be the 3rd fastest car overall at this time.

Moving into the afternoon’s first timed session we decided to stay with the same map on the motor but give Brian free rein on the rpms.  During our three hot laps Brian managed to turn a 1:51.18 lap which was good enough for 2nd place overall and first in class with the Speed Gallery Porsche that was snapping on our heels only a couple of tenths back.

Realizing that we had not pushed the car with its full power map we decided Brian should run the full 100 octane map and go for it during the 2nd and final timed session.

As Brian entered the front straight from his warm up lap and laid into the gas going through the gears and into 5th the wing hinge mount on the rear snapped allowing the wing to rotate 45 degrees and creating a huge parachute at the rear of the car. Determined and unscathed by the unfortunate events Brian went to work running two laps in the sub 1:51 range with the fastest being 1:50.38 which proved to be good enough for 2nd place overall and 1st in class AWD Unlimited.
